Born in 1924. Studied at Kala Bhavan, Santiniketan, where he subsequently taught, and at the Slade School of Art, London. His works are in the collection of the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi, the Musee de l’art, France, and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. The Government of India awarded him the Padma Shri in 1975, the Shiromani Puraskar in 1994 and the Padma Bhushan in 2006. A retrospective of his work was held at the National Gallery of Modern Art, Delhi, in 2003.
