Born in 1931 in Ahmedabad. Received a Post graduate Diploma in Painting from MS University, Baroda. He has held several solo shows in Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Rome, Tel Aviv, Damascus and many other cities across the world. In 1956, he received the National Award of the Lalit Kala Akademi, which he continued to receive for three consecutive years. He received the Mainichi Award at the Tokyo Biennale in 1965; a gold medal at the third Indian Triennale in 1975; the Padma Shri from the Government of India in 1986; and was honoured by the Delhi Sahitya Kala Parishad for his lifetime contribution in the field of Fine Art.
