Radhika Chand : Recent Works On Paper (Anjolie Ela Menon)

Chand's work is one of the best kept secrets of the Indian art scene. I have always maintained that the first criterion in judging a work of art is to stand in front of it and ask 'have I seen this (or something similar) before?' If the answer is 'yes' I would have my reservations about it. Chand's work on the other hand is totally unique and original, belonging to no previously recognized genre. These vibrant abstractions are executed with a freedom and vigour that are Pollock-like in their sense of action and yet somewhat reminiscent of the 'dot' paintings of Australian aboriginals, because like them, she relies on an unfailing instinct for form, colour and embellishment avoiding the constraints of formal cerebration.
